They were America's greatest war heroes ...

Imagine facing down the British at

Bunker Hill ... braving the hail of bullets at Pickett's Charge... going over the top at the Marne... storming Omaha Beach at Normandy... or repulsing Saddam's legions in the deserts of the Middle East.

The everyday soldiers who fought America's wars are the pride of the nation... and now you can see firsthand what life on the front lines was like for these brave men and women. The Jackson Barracks Military Museum uses life like figures to recreate the essence of the military experience, as well as displaying an unparalleled collection of weaponry, artifacts and memorabilia from all of our country's major wars:

Keeping spirits up in the ranks was an essential military goal. Music, games, pageantry, and battlefield awards were all part of this effort. The Museum features historic battalion flags, parade uniforms, honors and decorations dating back to the American Revolution.

Life in the Trenches and Foxholes

Realistic tableaus set up throughout the museum give you an intimate look at what life was really like for America's soldiers. This is a firsthand look at the heroism, sacrifice, and daily routines and rituals of the men and women who went to war for us. In addition, a unique collection of war letters, diaries and personal mementos helps round out the battlefield experience.

The Powder Magazine

Two years after the main barracks was completed, in 1837, the powder magazine was built - for the princely sum of $3,530.00. It served many functions in its day, including incarceration of prisoners from the Nazi Afrika Corps during World War II. It stored weaponry as recently as the 1960s. And it bears silent testimony to the many soldiers who served here, in the form of initials and dates carved on its original bricks and yellow cypress beams, dating as far back as 1872.

Theater

In addition to the 4200 square foot powder magazine and 6500 square foot annex, the museum includes a new, high-tech hexagonal theater, completed in 1991. Capable of seating 183 visitors, the theater presents films, award ceremonies, concerts, and historic society meetings, as well as other official functions.

Air Park

Completed in 1996, the park displays and pays tribute to America's newest military branch. It features seven aircraft from World War II to Desert Storm. Reconditioning of an A-26 was accomplished by a veterans group who maintained and flew the bomber during World War II.

Grounds

No country on earth has ever put together a mightier military machine than the U.S., and evidence of that tremendous strength is everywhere on the beautifully landscaped grounds of the museum. Tanks, fighter planes, helicopters, antiaircraft batteries, cannons, and more give ample evidence of America's awesome firepower.

Housed in the original Jackson Barracks powder magazine, built in 1837 as well as a recently completed 6500 square foot annex, the Museum brings to life the full experience of America's war heroes. Taste American history, and get to know the men and women who protected your freedom for over 200 years. Visit the Jackson Barracks Military Museum today!
